SCOTT MCBEAN
Award-Winning Writer, Editor,
Marketing Communications Professional
INTRODUCTION
“Pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work.” — Aristotle
You want the best. You want a professional with a white-hot passion for the written word, marketing, and verbal communications. You want me, Scott McBean.
“Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of intelligent effort.” — John Ruskin
Having had a romance with the written word—reading and writing—since childhood, it was a natural progression for me to pursue that option with full vigor at college. After graduating from the A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Journalism and Mass Communications and a Major in Advertising from Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas, I went on to become an award-winning writer, editor, and marketing communications professional. My writing experience includes the following print and online materials: storytelling, creative, promotional (any marketing collateral you would expect from a marketing department), social media, technical, training, and news. I have taught writing classes at Communiversity, the adult education/continuing education arm of the University of Missouri—Kansas City (UMKC). I have been writing professionally for over 20 years. My verbal skills include presenting, public speaking, training, teaching, interviewing, and facilitating meetings, forums, and events. I researched, wrote, and delivered news for KMAN Radio in Manhattan, Kansas—“The Little Apple.” My computer proficiencies include Windows, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, intranets, the Internet, and at an advanced level with Adobe Photoshop Elements 10—both PC and Mac. I am adept at Facebook (Personal and Business pages), Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, WordPress.org, YouTube, and Wix.com (website platform). I also have extensive experience with film cameras, digital cameras, and photo-editing. I am a person of the modern age, but I have an old-world work ethic, which means I am loyal, prompt, a curious sponge for new knowledge, and always the consummate—and fun—professional.
“There is no substitute for hard work.” — Thomas Edison
There are many accomplishments in my career that I am proud to have achieved. Here is my Top 5 list:
1. I was awarded the Sprint Values Excellence Award as the Chief Editor and contributing writer for a large-scale project—the complete re-write of Sprint’s Architectural Guide. The Architectural Guide provided guidelines for all Sprint Corporate Real Estate employees and contractors who worked for Sprint to follow when building, retrofitting, and/or maintaining all Sprint owned and leased buildings for all business units across the entire country.
2. Three years into the Marketing Department at Black & Veatch I was promoted to a Unit Leader supervisory position with six direct reports. This is where I earned my award-winning marketing communications credentials.
3. I founded, owned, and operated my own company for a decade called Parker Productions that offered writing, editing, and marketing communications services.
4. I authored a 76-page book entitled, “Career Transition Tailored to Your Best Asset—YOU!” (the book is for sale on this website). The book is designed to help people find their true selves, to give job seekers in transition confidence in themselves and their talents, and I wrote the book to fully encourage people in career transition to have the courage to unleash their uniqueness and greatness on the world. The book also provides practical resources and advice to help people who are in transition, as that is an exceptionally difficult time for job seekers.
5. Due to my impeccable organizational skills and my affinity for the high energy of multiple projects in a creative environment, I have never missed a deadline going back to my first class of my first day of college. In me you will find a goldmine of education, experiences, and talents. I am an asset and a top-performer.
“Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.” — Thomas Jefferson
I worked as an Operations Manager, Customer Expectations Manager, Leader on Duty, and Shrink and Loss Prevention Captain for Office Depot. I was responsible for driving exceptional customer service, all Operations and Logistics, and meeting or exceeding daily sales goals. I also performed complex opening and closing procedures, operated the cash registers and the copy and print equipment as needed, and guided associates in improving their performance. I resolved issues with upset customers and associates, read and interpreted store metrics to create plans for improvements, and worked to create a fun and high morale environment within the store. My customer satisfaction index was regularly in the 90%+ range with some days reaching 100%.
I offer freelance writing and editing. In this role I wrote monthly NewsFlash email newsletter content for the National Association of Parliamentarians. I am currently providing full editing services for an author's upcoming book. I am always ready to bring my passion and expertise to your next writing, editing, and/or marketing communications project or as an employee of your company!
